Sylvia I. Pikkarainen
HANCOCK – Sylvia I. Pikkarainen, a resident of Winona House at PortagePointe in Hancock, died on Sunday morning, Dec. 30, 2012, at the age of 95 years.
She was born Mar. 17, 1919, in Coburntown, to the late Albert and Anna (Partanen) Pikkarainen. She attended Hancock Public Schools and took commercial courses at Suomi College.
Sylvia was employed in local retail stores, including City Drug Store and the Twin City Style Shop in Hancock and Vertin’s Department Store in Houghton. In 1949, she received the Apprentice Pharmacist’s Certificate from the State of Michigan.
Sylvia was an accomplished figure skater in her younger years. She was a member of the Pelkie Laestadian Lutheran Church.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Aileen Elaine (Pikkarainen) Wiitanen.
She is survived by her nephew, Roy (Janet) Pikkarainen of Hancock; grandnephew, David (Victoria) Pikkarainen of Rockford, Minn.; and great-grandnephews and nieces, Michael (Jaclyn) Pikkarainen and children, Kyra, Andre and Alec, Emily (Clark) Mattila and son, Dominic, Eric, Stephen, Garrett, Kendra, Brett, Brendan, Kayla, Auna and Easton; grandnephew, Mark (Lynn) Pikkarainen of Rogers, Minn. and great-grandnephews Ryan and Aaron; and grandniece, Tara (Nolan) Kariniemi and son, Chandler; as well as distant relatives in Finland.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, in the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, with Pastor James Frantti to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday in the funeral home. Spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
