Priorities mixed up

To the editor:

I read with interest the front page newspaper article (“Closer to goal”) on Dec. 24, 2012.

I find it interesting that we are about ready to fall off the fiscal cliff, and we are borrowing money from China, to fund a $286,000 project that will only benefit very few. This $286,000 grant is being provided by the U.S. Forest Service to buy conservation easements on private property.

We are at a point in this country when people cannot find work, unemployment benefits are running out, we cannot fund pension plans, education, or Medicare but we can give $286,000 to acquire conservation easements.

Am I the only one confused?
