Thrilling victory for Hornet hockey

L’ANSE – Three L’Anse goals in the last 2 1/2 minutes capped a thrilling finish to Monday’s Lake Superior Hockey Conference game at Meadowbrook Arena as the Purple Hornets defeated Jeffers 5-3.

L’Anse trailed 3-2 after two periods, a deficit that held up until Sean Lake scored the equalizer.

Less than a minute later, Tyler Polich, who had assisted on L’Anse’s first two goals, scored the game-winner with 1:33 to play. He added an empty-netter in the final minute for a four-point night.

L’Anse got a huge night from goaltender Jason Rank, who made 35 saves to keep the Hornets in it.

L’Anse (2-6, 1-2 LSHC) plays a make-up game at Negaunee Thursday night.

Jeffers, which got second-period goals from Matt Mantta, Travis Wesa and Anthony Harris and 15 saves from Dax Durocher, falls to 7-5, 2-2 in league play. The Jets play at Sault Ste. Marie Friday night.
