Gremlins mercy Miners
HOUGHTON – Let the record show Negaunee had a lead against Houghton in the first period of Tuesday’s Lake Superior Hockey Conference game at Dee Stadium. Cody Wetton scored for the Miners at 7:57 of the first.
The lead didn’t last long. Houghton tied it within 70 seconds, took the lead 35 seconds later and rolled to a 9-1 decision.
Houghton outshot Negaunee 53-7 and pumped in two more goals in the first period, 42 seconds apart, for a 4-1 lead.
The Gremlins added three more (on 31 shots) in the second before closing it out by the goal-differential rule at 4:04 of the third.
Ray Brice and Casey Markham potted a pair of goals apiece for Houghton, which also got tallies from Connor Hannon, Spencer Donnelly, Cole Hagwell, Jed Kallio and Luke Haataja. Austin Erva contributed a playmaker, while Brice, Hannon and Hunter Rajala added two helpers apiece.
Jayson Wiitala made six saves.
Houghton hosts Fond du Lac, Wis., Friday night.
