Houghton girls win Pine Mountain meet

IRON MOUNTAIN – Houghton used its depth to win the girls’ portion of a prep Alpine ski meet at Pine Mountain Thursday.

Kingsford’s Mandy Haferkorn was the top individual skier in both slalom and giant slalom, but Houghton put three skiers in the top five of slalom and three in the top six in GS.

Houghton finished with 40 points to Marquette’s 56. Ironwood was third with 137.

Leslie Hamar, Mary Maroste and Taylor Venegas took places three through five in the slalom, while Hamar was second, Brianne Maggio fourth and Maroste sixth in GS.

Ellie Lucier, Rylie Store and Madison Peer notched top-10 finishes in slalom, while Lucier and Venegas landed in the top 10 of giant slalom.

On the boys’ side, Houghton took second place with 61 points to Marquette’s 34.

Nick Cecconi of Kingsford was the top slalom skier, with Tony Stein taking third for Houghton, followed by Ian Helman and Jacob Jarvis in fifth and sixth and Connor Johnson in eighth.

Marquette took the top three places in GS led by Luke Johnson. Helman was Houghton’s top finisher in seventh, with Johnson in ninth.

The next meet of the season is Jan. 24 at Marquette Mountain.
