Roy Erland Byykkonen
ISHPEMING – Roy Erland Byykkonen, age 76, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, with family by his side at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he had resided since 2008.
He was born Oct. 4, 1936, in Pelkie, a son of the late Abel and Lillian Byykkonen. He graduated from Baraga High School in 1954.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He re-enlisted and served from 1958-1961.
Roy married Shirley Pesola on Sept. 2, 1961. He worked for the Ford Motor Company, White Pine Copper Company, Ropes Gold Mine, the Mather B Mine and the U.S. Postal Service. He also worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, from which he retired in 1998 after 28 years of service.
He enjoyed bike riding, fishing, gardening, getting together with his friends for coffee and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching Tiger baseball as well as the Green Bay Packers. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time outdoors at his camp in Nisula and volunteering at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette with his wife, Shirley.
Roy is survived by seven children; Susan Bradbury of Iron Mountain, Roy (Amy) Byykkonen Jr. of Seattle, Wash. Pam (Ken) Matheson of Giese, Minn., Carol (John) Redders of Hartford, Wis., Mary Wilmes of Omro, Wis., John Byykkonen of L’Anse and Patsy (Rich) Lusardi of Ishpeming; 16 grandchildren, Josiah, Trenton, Emmalee and Elliot Bradbury, Peter and Rebecca Byykkonen, Jaron (Leah) Matheson, Janessa Matheson, Micaela, Hannah and Michael Redders, James, Steven and Holly Wilmes, Stephanie and Kaylee Lusardi; three great-grandchildren, River Bradbury, Alaso and Zaven Matheson.
He is also survived by four brothers, Donald (Verna) Byykkonen of Phoenix, Ariz., Bob (Irene) Byykkonen of Ishpeming, David (Agnes) Byykkonen of Houghton and Bruce (Katie) Byykkonen of Lake Linden; two sisters, Gertrude Makela of Hancock and Eva Kohtala of Ishpeming; numerous nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Abel and Lillian Byykkonen; his wife, Shirley Byykkonen; two grandchildren, Lydia and Davin Bradbury.
Funeral services will be held in Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming on Tuesday, Jan. 15 with Pastor D. Michael Carriere to officiate. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a memorial service at 1 p.m Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 at the conclusion of the service. Spring burial will be in the Elo Cemetery.
