Shorthanded Hornet girls fall at home

L’ANSE – L’Anse’s shorthanded frontcourt got outmuscled by Ishpeming Monday en route to a 49-38 non-conference decision in favor of the Hematites.

L’Anse lost leading rebounder Valerie Rajala to a knee injury in practice last week. She will be out at least through this week.

“Without Valerie to help with rebounding, they got a lot of second-, and in some instances, third-chance baskets. We weren’t able to run because we struggled to clear the boards,” L’Anse coach Scott Lloyd said.

The teams remained close through the first half, with Ishpeming carrying the 21-17 halftime lead, but the gap grew as Ishpeming gained its edge inside and outscored L’Anse 18-10 in the third.

“Ishpeming was starting to put their big girls in the blocks and give us some trouble,” Lloyd said.

Jessica Spencer led all scorers with 23 for Ishpeming.

Madi Swanson paced L’Anse with a tough 18.

“Nothing came easy, and even when she did get to the rim, there were a lot of people contesting her shots,” Lloyd said.

Ishpeming won the JV and freshman games.

L’Anse (7-2) is at Negaunee tonight.

IRON RIVER – West Iron County’s outside shooting was too much for E-TC Monday.

The Wykons’ Kylee Erickson nailed six triples and totaled 24 points.

“She was hitting threes about three feet behind the line,” E-TC coach Jacky Besonen said. “It was tough. You had to make sure you were on her, on her as soon as she crossed half-court.”

The Wykons’ 24-point second quarter put them ahead 36-24 at halftime, and the closes E-TC got down the stretch was nine.

The Panthers were co-led by 11 points apiece from Molly Niemi and Zoey McGeshick. Brittany Suomumaki added 10.

E-TC (7-4) plays at Bessemer Thursday.
