Gremlins, Jets go home early in LSHC games

L’ANSE – Jed Kallio’s hat trick led a 9-1 Houghton rout of L’Anse Monday in Lake Superior Hockey Conference play at Meadowbrook Arena.

Kallio finished the feat and the game at 11:55 of the third.

The Gremlins made the Purple Hornets pay for rule-breaking, as they scored four times on the power play in five opportunities.

Ray Brice opened the scoring at 4:37, one of three first-period goals for Houghton as they issued 21 shots without reply.

L’Anse got on the board early in the second on Riley Thomson’s tally, but Houghton scored four in the second period and two in the third to finish it off.

Brice finished with two goals and three assists, while the Gremlins also got goals from Jon Bostwick, Connor Hannon, Cale Markham and Austin Erva.

Jayson Wiitala made nine saves for Houghton, Jason Rank made 52 for L’Anse.

Jeffers 10, Negaunee 2

HOUGHTON – A four-goal night from Travis Wesa helped the Jets cruise past Negaunee.

Wesa had his second hat trick in three days by the 16:12 mark of the first period as he scored the first, fourth and last of the Jets’ six-goal first-period outburst.

Matt Mantta had a night, too, scoring once in each period for his hat trick and ending the game via goal-differential rule at 8:40 of the third.

Mantta, Brady Guilbault and James Randell recorded two assists apiece.

Jeffers also got goals from Stephen Butina, Tyler Bailey and Troy Dunstan.

Dax Durocher made six saves in the first period and Trevor Lowney three in the last two for the victors.
