E-TC, Gordon light up scoreboard at Chassell
CHASSELL – Ewen-Trout Creek High basketball standout Dillon Gordon has won over another coach as being one of the best they have seen.
Chassell coach Steve Spahn sang the praises of Gordon after his team dropped an 81-53 decision at Ed Helakoski Gymnasium Thursday evening.
“He (Gordon) is one of the best to ever play here,” Spahn said afterward. “He’s very quick with his release, has great range and can create his own scoring opportunities. What else can you say about a player?”
Gordon’s abilities were very much on display early in the second quarter.
With his team holding a slim 25-24 lead over the determined CHS squad, the senior guard suddenly got white-hot.
He canned five three-point baskets in a row and added two free throws as the Ontonagon County squad seized a 45-35 lead at the break.
Ewen-Trout Creek coach Brad Besonen said his ace is capable of going off on spurts.
“Dillon can do that … he can put us on his back … and carry us,” Besonen stated. “He’s just a great basketball talent.”
Until that explosion, Chassell was holding its own, thanks to some fine shooting by Josh Pietila.
“I thought we played pretty solid basketball in the first half,” Spahn noted. “I thought we came out and matched their intensity. But we got tired in the second half and lost track of the basket, something you can’t do against a team like that.”
The eventual winners pumped the margin to 63-42 after three periods as Mike Borseth and Lane Brown turned up their games.
Borseth notched 20 of his 22 points in the second portion of the contest, while Brown was good for 13 points and was a strong presence underneath.
“It was good to see other kids get involved,” Besonen said. “Our bigs have been improving right along.”
Gordon drilled eight triples on the way to a game-high 32 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had five assists as the winners moved to 7-2 on the season.
Chassell, dropping to 4-5, had five players in double figures. Pietila dropped in 16 points, while Evan Huhta netted 14 more and grabbed nine rebounds.
Carson Ryynanen, who had seven boards, and Jake Tuomi each pitched in 10 markers.
E-TC will now prepare for a Tuesday match at unbeaten Lake Linden-Hubbell. Chassell goes to Dollar Bay on the same night.
