L’Anse boys let lead slip to West Iron

L’ANSE – Austin Waara led the West Iron County boys out of a big hole to a WestPAC victory over L’Anse Friday, 63-58.

“We played very well for three quarters and in the fourth quarter we did a poor job of executing on offense and Waara got very hot in the second half,” L’Anse coach Mike Ostermeyer said.

Waara had 22 of his 25 points in the second half as the Wykons overame a seven-point deficit after three quarters by outscoring the Purple Hornets 22-10 in the fourth.

West Iron, which trailed 19-6 after a quarter, took its first lead at 50-49, then took control for good on Waara’s jumper from the elbow to make it 58-56 with about 1 1/2 minutes to go.

“I thought we panicked and we didn’t execute. We didn’t get (James) Veker touches late in the game,” Ostermeyer said.

Veker posted 30 points in just his second game back from an ankle injury.

“He was getting inside. He posted up very well and for the most part, our guards got him the ball in spots where he could score,” Ostermeyer said.

Adam Newby pitched in 12 for the Wykons, while Daniel Perrow added 11 for L’Anse (3-5, 0-4 WestPAC), including a pair of threes. L’Anse won the JV game.

The Purple Hornets host Jeffers Tuesday.
