Hornets hold off Jets

L’ANSE – Jeffers made 12 three-pointers Wednesday, but needed 13, and because of it, L’Anse came away with a 54-52 home non-league victory.

“We’ve had some tough ballgames recently. We’ve been getting better but haven’t been getting results. It was nice to see us be down and fight back and get back and get a win,” L’Anse coach Mike Ostermeyer said.

The Purple Hornets trailed by six with 3 1/2 minutes to play, but quickly overturned the deficit, pulling ahead with a pair of Jacob Ostermeyer free throws with 40 seconds to go. Daniel Perrow added one more about 20 seconds later, and Jeffers missed an attempt for a go-ahead three at the buzzer.

Key to L’Anse coming back in the fourth quarter was guard Daniel Perrow, who had 14 of his 18 points in the final frame, including three of L’Anse’s four triples.

“We got him freed off a couple screens against their zone,” coach Ostermeyer said.

Jeffers’ Troy Kinnunen, who made seven treys, led all scorers with 27 points.

The Jets fall to 5-5.

James Veker added 16 for the Purple Hornets (4-6).

Jeffers is at Watersmeet Friday, while L’Anse hosts Ewen-Trout Creek.
