Ontonagon girls blow out Baraga in second quarter
ONTONAGON – Ontonagon hit the gas pedal in the second quarter to pull away from Baraga and win 50-24 in their Copper Country Conference game Saturday.
The Gladiators (10-2, 7-0 CCC) held a narrow two-point lead after a quarter, but got 10 points in the second quarter from Brooke Turin and six from Chelsea Truscott to outscore the Lady Vikings 18-4.
Ontonagon coach Dick Franti said the second quarter made all the difference.
“It was very intense the first quarter, then when we got that lead, the whole tone or tenor of the game changed for whatever reason.”
Baraga (6-7, 3-3) couldn’t get its offense on track until it was too late, trailing 39-13 after three quarters before compiling nearly half its total in the fourth.
Brittany Nieskes led Baraga with seven points. The Lady Vikings are at home against Chassell tonight.
Turin finished with 14 points to lead all scorers. Brilynn Pollard added 13 and Truscott 12 for Ontonagon, which won the JV game in overtime and hosts Ewen-Trout Creek Feb. 4.
