Gazette fills positions

HOUGHTON – The Daily Mining Gazette has hired a new staffer and promoted another to an editor position.

Scott Viau, previously the Ontonagon and Keweenaw County reporter, started this week as associate editor. Newly hired is Meagan Stilp, who will handle photo editing in addition to covering the Copper Country Intermediate School District and writing business articles and features.

“Scott has been a great addition to our team,” said Managing Editor Jane Nordberg. “He hit the ground running and was eager to learn everything he could, and I’m pleased to offer him this promotion. Meagan brings a wealth of expertise to her variety of duties and she is a welcome addition to our staff.”

Viau graduated in May from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. He was also a staffer for The North Wind at NMU, where he started as copy editor and reporter before moving to features editor and then managing editor.

“I’m very happy to be named associate editor,” he said. “My goal in coming to the Gazette was always to learn more about the industry and move up, and it happened much quicker than I expected.”

Stilp graduated in 2011 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she majored in English and minored in business. She was also a graphic designer at the university’s student newspaper, The Badger Herald.

“I’m excited to be able to use my major, and write, and get back into the design portion of the newspaper,” she said. “It’s a lot of the things I like to do rolled into one job.”
