CALUMET – Ruth Erkkila, 93, passed away Jan. 28, 2013, at GardenView Assisted Living and Memory Care in Calumet.
She was born on Feb. 2, 1919, in Calumet, a daughter of Carlos and Violet (Munch) Cane. Ruth attended the Public Schools of Calumet through the 10th grade when she left school to help out with the family business, Cane’s Taxi.
After her marriage to Reino Erkkila of Calumet, she devoted her life to being a homemaker for her family. Ruth especially enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking for her children, grandchildren and friends. She and Reino built their own home, sauna and garage on Lakeshore Drive and were able to spend many enjoyable years there together.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Reino; her parents; and brother, Louis.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Ginny) Erkkila of Calumet; daughter, Ruth (Gary) Albig of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; her loving sister, Violet (Francis) Cloutier of Laurium; and grandchildren, David (Mary) Erkkila of Brighton, Mich., Dan (Barb) Erkkila of Durango, Colo., Carrie (Dan) Huuki of Atlantic Mine, Susan (Steve) Kangas of Laurium, Mark (Amy) Erkkila of Calumet, Kurt (Renee) Erkkila of Laurium, Ruth (Greg) Storm of Laurium, Gina (Jeff) Erickson of Laurium, Kristen (Jeff) Voorhies of Comstock Park, Mich., Jodi (Jason) Skoog of Laurium, Jenny (Doug) Leaser of Elk River, Minn., Alan (Irina) Albig of Boise, Idaho and 44 great-grandchildren. Ruth is also survived by her brother-in-law, Harry (Caroline) Erkkila of Laurium; sister-in-law, Winnie (Erkkila) Jarvinen of San Bruno, Calif. and numerous nieces, nephews and a few cousins.
A memorial service will be held for Ruth at the Ryan Funeral Home in Calumet on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 1pm. Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service from 11am to 1pm.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dawn Lee and the nursing staff at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, the staff and residents at GardenView Assisted Living, who welcomed Ruth and supported her with loving care during her stay there, and especially to our cousin, Albert Erkkila and his wife Rita, who looked after our mother and assisted her in so many ways since the passing of our father in 2005.
