Copper Kings drop Vikings boys

CALUMET – Calumet avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season, putting away Baraga 52-26 in a non-conference make-up game at home Thursday.

“First game coming off a real frustrating game last week (a buzzerbeater loss at Houghton Friday), I think the guys showed a lot of energy and a lot of effort on the defensive end. I think they did a nice job,” Calumet coach Mike Ojala said.

The Copper Kings held the Vikings to just 13 points over the first 24 minutes, by which point they were up by 28.

Paul Torola took over offensively, scoring 23 points and knocking down one of his team’s six three-pointers.

“We’re going to have to knock down perimeter shots more consistently. With six threes, that’s a nice stat for us,” Ojala said.

Chad Sturos added 10 for Calumet, which is at Jeffers tonight. Calumet won the JV game.

Zach Owens led Baraga (0-11) with 11 points. The Vikings are at Dollar Bay tonight.
