E-TC boys shocked in home gym

EWEN – Ewen-Trout Creek suffered a shocker in its home gym Monday, getting beat 63-54 by Bessemer for its Porcupine Mountain Conference loss in more than five years.

E-TC had won 34 league games in a row dating back to a Jan. 23, 2007 road contest against those same Speedboys, but Monday wasn’t looking like the Panthers’ night from the get-go.

“They flat out outplayed us, they outexecuted offensively, they were very solid defensively, they owned the glass, they just really came at us and our guys did not respond very well,” E-TC coach Brad Besonen said.

The Speedboys led 38-31 at the half after Besonen said they used a variety of sharp cuts to put on a ‘clinic’ on the offensive end.

The Panthers tightened up in the second half and closed to within one in the third quarter, only for the Speedboys to get a little more separation and hold off E-TC down the stretch despite poor (7-of-19) free-throw shooting.

Ben Zelinski and Taylor Smith co-led Bessemer with 16 points apiece.

E-TC, which was 46-1 at home over the last five seasons, got a game-high 20 from Dillon Gordon and 12 points from Lane Brown.

The teams meet again in Bessemer Feb. 28.

E-TC (14-3, 2-1 PMC) hosts Watersmeet tonight. The Panthers won the JV game.
