Calumet Village Council thanked

CALUMET – A property owner stopped by the Calumet Village Council meeting Thursday to thank it for its support with his project to renovate a building downtown.

Jim Flood, owner of the Coppo Building on Sixth Street across from the Vertin Building, said he appreciated the support of the various village councils over the four years the project has been going on.

“Without the village, this project would not happen,” Flood said.

The village applied for Michigan State Housing Development Authority loans to help fund the project, and Flood said he appreciates the MSHDA officials trusted the Coppo project and other projects the agency has funded over the years, also, Flood said.

“MSHDA with Calumet is a good mix,” he said.

The Coppo Building now has business spaces on the ground floor and apartments on the second and third floors.

Flood said since MSHDA requires that low- and moderate-income residents occupy the apartments for the first five years after renovation, some village residents have concerns about the type of tenants who occupy the apartments, but Flood said that hasn’t been a problem for him.

“I have had no problem finding quality tenants,” he said.

Council members approved final payment requests for Flood’s project and for another project at Scott and Oak streets. Council members also approved the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region third-party administrator management plan for the Morrison School building project to construct commercial spaces and apartments.

Council members also approved a housing assessment for a Scott and Oak streets project and another project at Sixth and Oak streets.

In other business, trustees heard from Department of Public Works Director Steve Kellow employees have been working to clear snow from village streets, but much of the DPW equipment is having mechanical problems.
