Jets roll 9-3 in season finale

HOUGHTON – Matthew Mantta’s five-point night keyed a Jeffers runaway over the last two periods as the Jets beat L’Anse 9-3 in both teams’ season finales.

After both teams failed to score in the first period of the Lake Superior Hockey Conference game, Mantta scored his first two goals either side of a tally for L’Anse’s Brett Hebert for a 2-1 lead at the 8:19 mark.

Brady Guilbault kicked in a pair late in the period as the Jets went back to the locker room up 4-1.

Though Cody Goldsworthy put in a pair of goals for L’Anse in the third quarter, Jeffers answered with five, two for Travis Wesa and one for Troy Dunstan and Tyler Bailey followed by Mantta’s hat trick goal on the power play at 12:28.

Wesa and Anthony Harris posted two assists apiece for Jeffers, which enters the Division 3 regional tournament with a 15-10 overall record (4-6 LSHC).

Jason Rank stopped 15 shots for L’Anse, which finishes the regular season 5-14-1 (1-9 LSHC). Dax Durocher made 11 saves for the Jets.

Jeffers plays Hancock Tuesday at 7 in the first round of the regionals at Michigan Tech. The winner will play L’Anse at 6 p.m. Thursday.
