Bowlers wanted

HOUGHTON – There will be pizza, prizes and more Saturday, when Big Brothers Big Sisters holds the 21st annual Bowl for Kids.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mine Shaft in Houghton. Teams of four to eight people can register for the event, which raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs for local children.

As the only major fundraiser of the year, Bowl for Kids is vital for Big Brothers Big Sisters, said program director Maggie Munch. Last year, it raised $30,000.

“It’s the one time each year we’re out asking people to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters program,” she said. “We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without Bowl for Kids and the community members who are participating.”

The local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency has served more than 500 children across the western Upper Peninsula in the past year. The mentoring program operates under U.P. Kids, which changed its name from Good Will Farm in 2012.

Registration is open until Friday. Each person must raise a minimum of $35 to participate.

Munch said they’re still behind their goals for participants.

“We’re still recruiting, still hoping people will sign up,” she said.
