Eating and skiing
HANCOCK – The concept of eating while cross-country skiing or snowshoeing may seem strange, but members of the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club think it’s a great way to raise funds for their group.
Candi Silvola, KNSC board member, said the fifth annual Glide-N-Gorge will take place from noon until 3 p.m. Sunday at the Maasto Hiihto ski trails in Hancock.
“It’s our only fundraiser,” she said.
Last year, Silvola said about 120 people took part in the event, and about $1,800 was raised for the KNSC.
The 3.5-mile course through the Maasto Hiihto trails will accommodate skiers and snowshoers of most abilities, Silvola said.
“It’s a very easy course,” she said.
The cost for tickets for the event is $20 per person if purchased no later than Friday, Silvola said.
Tickets will be $30 if purchased the day of the event at the trail chalet at the Houghton County Fairgrounds, which is where the Glide-N-Gorge starts and ends. Children who attend the event can take part for free if they’re with a paid adult.
There will be three stops along the course with different types of food, Silvola said.
At the 1.5-mile point, there will be appetizers provided by Peterson’s Fish Market. Tadych’s Econo Foods will provide oranges and grapes, and the Keweenaw Food Co-Op will provide energy bars. Participants will be able to make their own food, also.
“There’s a bonfire so people can roast hot dogs and marshmallows,” she said.
At the next stop located in the gorge along Swedetown Creek, Silvola said participants will be able to get soups, stews and chilies provided by members of the KNSC. Soup and bread will be provided by 5th & Elm Coffee House and Eatery.
The final stop is at the chalet, Silvola said, where participants can get desserts. The Library Restaurant & Brew Pub will provide cheesecake, Roy’s Pasties and Bakery will provide baked goods, and the Keweenaw Food Co-Op will provide cookies.
There will be more than food at the chalet, Silvola said. There will also be live music.
