Man sentenced for meth lab operation
HOUGHTON – A Chassell man who operated a methamphetamine lab was sentenced to 11 months in jail Thursday in Houghton County Circuit Court.
Michael Newberry, 25, was charged with operating and maintaining a meth lab and possessing methamphetamine, both 20-year felonies. State minimum sentencing guidelines called for 0 to 11 months.
Newberry received credit for 135 days served. He can be released after 45 days to go to Mission Bible Treatment Center in Gaastra, where he has undergone four months of a 10-month rehabilitation.
If he does not successfully complete the treatment, he must return to the Houghton County Jail to complete the remainder of his sentence.
Pam Dobbs said Newberry chose the program himself, and it’s already made an impact.
“He has not walked away from the program,” she said. “He came straight back when he was released from the program to come back here for his plea, knowing what he was facing. He’s shown every respect to this court he possibly could.”
Newberry apologized for his actions.
“I know it’s time for me to change, and I’m ready for that,” he said.
