All-State ice honors for five locals
HOUGHTON – Three forwards and a defenseman from local prep hockey teams were named first-team all-state in voting conducted recently by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association.
Houghton’s Ray Brice, a junior, had 38 goals and 28 assists in the regular season alone, putting him among statewide leaders and giving him Houghton High School’s goal-scoring record.
Brice followed it up with five goals in two regional tournament games, including four in a championship game victory over Hancock.
Teammate Connor Hannon had a special season of his own with 29 goals and 26 assists in the regular season, followed by a hat trick in a regional semifinal against Calumet.
Brendan Jacques had 23 goals and 25 assists in his senior season for Calumet. He notched six game-winners and led the team in plus-minus.
On defense, Hunter Rajala of Houghton made the cut. The senior had five goals and 23 assists in the regular season.
One other player received all-state honors as a member of the Division 3 second team: Calumet forward Lucas Lahnala.
Lahnala posted 19 goals and 24 assists in his senior season.
Three local players received honorable mention: Travis Wesa of Jeffers, James Sturos of Calumet and Kyle Hauswirth of Hancock.
