Ripley racers appreciate support
To the editor:
The Mont Ripley Race Team hosted Upper Peninsula and downstate teams for the seventh annual Keweenaw Cup Invitational ski race at Mont Ripley on Feb. 16. The day was perfect for racing and more than 60 racers participated. MRRT beat out teams from Marquette Mountain and Pine Mountain in the closest Cup ever. Medals were awarded by age groups and gender for the top three places which then scored points for the individual teams.
The race could not happen without the support of Mont Ripley and all of their staff. A supportive community of families and other adult volunteers led to a well-coordinated course set up and take down, giant slalom and slalom races, and a potluck lunch enjoyed by all in the race chalet.
Many generous local businesses provided supplies and cash donations to support the 2013 Keweenaw Cup.
MRRT would like to thank Vollwerths, Down Wind Sports, Hardee’s, McDonald’s, Mike Lahti at State Farm Insurance, 5th & Elm Coffee House and Eatery, Hancock Bike Shop, McGann Building Supply, Superior Family Chiropractic, Econo Foods, The Wicker and Willow Company, The Shelden Grille, Northland Veterinary Clinic and Surplus Outlet.
Earlier in the season, a grant to upgrade the MRRT racing gates was provided by the Keweenaw Community Foundation. The gates are used for training and racing at Mont Ripley and the entire team is thankful that the KCF assisted the team.
MRRT welcomes all interested skiers to give us a try on any day that we are training at Mont Ripley. They will receive coaching and the opportunity to compete with the team while racing down Ripley. Contact Mike Salmi at 482-1873 with any questions.
