Gladys B. (Pakkola) Marketty
ISHPEMING – Gladys B. Marketty, 88, of Ishpaming, passed away Saturday, Mar. 9, 2013, at her home and while in the care of her family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Gladys was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Laurium, the daughter of the later William and Sophie (Basto) Wiitanen. She grew up in Centennial Heights and was a graduate of Calumet High School.
She married Arne Pakkola in 1941, and in 1960 they moved to Ishpeming.
She married Francis “Spud” Marketty in 1988 and they spent many years in Deltona, Fla.
Gladys will be remembered as a great cook. She adored her family who meant the world to her.
Gladys moved back to Ishpeming following “Spuds” death in 1993. She enjoyed working as the crossing guard at the C.L. Phelps School in Ishpaming for a few years.
She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church.
Survivors include five children: Jerold (Johanna) Pakkola of Otter Lake, Sandra (Tony) Venezia of Deltona, Fla., Bonnie Corkin of Ishpeming, Dale (Mike) Paakola of Traverse City and Wendy (Daniel) Kainulainen, Sr. of Negaunee; 11 grandchildren, Todd Williams, Johathan & Jaren Paakola, Shawn & Jason Venezia, Amy Perry, Scott Corkin, Dean and Shanon Paakola, Daniel Kainulainen, Jr. & Linda Kainulainen; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Florence Paakola of Wadsworth, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.
Gladys was preceded in death by her first husband, Arne Paakola Dec. 5, 1970; her second husband, Francis “Spud” Marketty in 1993; a son-in-law, David Corkin in 2012; seven brothers; three sisters.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 12 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming with thge funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Scott Lindenberg to officiate. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gladys’ grandsons.
