Robert W. Paavola
ONKALO’S CORNER ROAD – Robert W. “Bobbu” Paavola, Sr., 85, a resident of the Onkalo’s Corner Road, died early Friday morning, Mar. 22, 2013, at Portage Health following a nine-month battle with cancer.
He was born on Sept. 10, 1927, in Trimountain, a son of the late Waino W. and Ellen E. (Erickson) Paavola.
Robert’s father passed away when Robert was nine years old. His mother then married Otto Putkela who died in 1994.
Robert attended the John A. Doelle School in Tapiola.
Robert was employed as a truck driver for 20 years with Waino Laakaniemi Logging, several other logging businesses, and later, was employed for 22 years at Northern Hardwoods, retiring from there.
On Feb. 26, 1949, he was married to the former Dolores B. Onkalo in South Range.
Robert was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1947 to 1949 at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Robert attended Grace Lutheran Church in South Range with his wife, Dolores.
He enjoyed working around the house and repairing whatever needed to be fixed. He was mechanically inclined and if he did not have the right part to get a job completed, he would make the part. He loved the outdoors and being in the woods. He enjoyed the Finnish heritage and liked watching the Suomi Kutsuu program. Robert will be remembered for his wit and good sense of humor.
Surviving are his wife, Dolores of Onkalo’s Corner Rd.; three sons, Robert “Butch” (Debbie) Paavola of Baltic, Eddie (Debbie) Paavola of Balitc, and Paul (Debbie) Paavola of Houghton; two daughters, Jayne (Terry Neault) of Calumet, and Julie (John) Shulstad of Green Bay, Wis.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Paavola of South Range; one sister, Helen Snell of Petoskey, Mich.; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and his cat and companion, Jaaska.
Besides his parents and step-father, Robert was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Earl Snell; a grandson, Erik Paavola; and a brother-in-law, Phillip Onkalo, who was killed in Vietnam.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Mar. 25, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church in South Range, with Pastor Sally Wilke to officiate. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Monday in the church. Spring burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.
