Super show on Hockey Saturday
HANCOCK – On the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association’s big day, a couple of its littlest players provided some hockey heroics Saturday.
Overtime was needed to crown the house league champions in two of the four games on Hockey Saturday at Houghton County Arena.
In the Squirt game, Edward Jones and Brockway went into the fourth OT before Caden Hillstrom delivered the game-winner at 1:17 of the fourth five-minute extra session for a 2-1 victory. The assist went to Travis Asiala.
Bo Sung Kim had Ed Jones’ first goal of the game at 7:18 of the first period, but Brandon Norkol equalized for Brockway on an assist from Zane Beyer at 6:10 of the second.
In the Mite game, Houghton Fire rallied from 4-0 down to tie it up, but Dominick Pizzi had the answer, scoring the game-winning goal 3:18 into OT for a 6-5 victory for Hancock Fire.
Camden Markham put two quick ones on the board, followed by Pizzi and Brice Hanner for a 4-0 lead after just 5:10, but A.J. Datto recorded a hat trick in an 8:12 span of the second period for Houghton.
Gaborik Carlson (Houghton Fire) and Markham (Hancock Fire) tacked on goals for a 5-4 Hancock Fire lead after two.
Kade Farrell notched the only goal of the third, sending it to an extra session.
Tervo Agency topped M&M Powersports 5-3 for the Pee Wee title. Tyler Brunet scored a pair of goals for the winners, while Bryce Randell, George Butvilas and Paul Lorenzetti chipped in one apiece.
Tervo trailed 2-1 early in the second but scored the next four unanswered to take control.
Hunter Therrian, Michael Stuber and Jett Heinonen tallied for M&M.
In the Bantam game, KRC controlled AFM 9-3. Carter Nettell, Cory Tourtillott and Carl Olson scored two goals apiece, while Reid Hamar, Nick Weingarten and Trey Heinonen pitched in single scores. Tourtillott had five assists.
Ronald Olson had a hat trick in defeat for AFM.
