Storm 19U dominates opener at Nationals

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Keweenaw Storm 19U girls’ hockey team got off to a dominating start Wednesday in the USA Hockey Nationals.

The Storm outshot the Falcons of Lake Forest, Ill., 54-13 and rolled to a 4-0 win in both teams’ opener of pool play.

Keweenaw controlled the game from the outset, with Kim Harter scoring just 22 seconds into the game on an assist from Kenna Farrey.

Though the Storm went into the locker room up just 1-0 after the first period, shots were 16-1 in their favor.

Less than a minute after killing their first penalty of the game, the Storm doubled their lead, as Selena Stromer made it 2-0.

Stromer scored again at 3:27 of the third, while Megan Yeo tacked on a power-play tally a few minutes later.

Stephanie King made all 13 saves for Keweenaw, which plays its second of three round-robin games today against the Charles River (Mass.) Blazers. The Blazers beat the New Jersey Colonials 4-1 in their opener.

The top four teams in the six-team pool will play in the quarterfinals over the weekend.
