Mrs. Anne Karpinen

CALUMET – Mrs. Anne Karpinen, age 99, passed away at Portage Pointe in Hancock on Friday, April 5, 2013.

She was born in Calumet on July 30, 1913, a daughter of the late Mary and Anton Stiglich of Tamarack Location. She attended Calumet Public Schools.

She left the area to work in Detroit in 1936. She married former Ahmeek resident, John Stefanac, in 1937. John passed away in 1944. Anne returned to Calumet in 1945.

In 1948, Anne was married to Edward Karpinen and he passed away in 1963.

In 1965, she entered Nursing School and graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1966. She received her Licensed Practical Nursing degree and worked at Calumet Public Hospital, now Aspirus Keweenaw, until her retirement in Dec. of 1975.

She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and the Ladies Alter Society. She was a life member of the Croatian Fraternal Union No. 270 and a life member of the VFW Post 3900, (now 4624) Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are two daughters, Charlene Pearce of Calumet and Joanne Karpinen (Bruce Townsley) of East Lansing, Mich.; two brothers, Albert Stiglich of West Allis, Wis.and Frank Stiglich of Calumet; a sister, Mary Zuvich of Calumet; two grandchildren- James (Carrie) Pearce of Calumet and Jodi (Rich) Peek of Caledonia; seven great-grandchildren- Joshua (Danielle), Brittney, Lindsey, and Austin Pearce and Cameron, Kirsten, and Grant Peek, two great-great-grandchildren- Ryder and Whitney; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceded in death by: her parents, two husbands, and four brothers, Tony, Jack, Edward, and Tom.

The mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday April 9, 2013, at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Calumet. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet.

Spring burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Copper Country Humane Society or St. Paul the Apostle Church Capital Fund.
