Storm cruises through pool 3-0

FREMONT, Calif. – The Keweenaw Storm enters the knockout phase of the USA Hockey Tier II 19U Nationals as the only perfect team left in the tournament after pool play.

The Storm finished pool play Friday by accelerating past the Chazy (N.Y.) Lady Flyers 6-2 in a battle between the top two teams in the pool.

Chazy struck first on a shorthanded breakaway goal from Emily Raville 2:58 in, but it took less than five minutes for the Storm to tie it up on Jessica Schlaff’s fourth goal of the tournament at 7:29.

Keweenaw kept its foot on the gas pedal, as Kim Harter scored twice late in the period to put the Storm ahead 3-1.

The onslaught continued early in the second, as Bailey Raffaelli and Lexi Pyykkonen buried chances in the first 10 minutes, making a second Raville goal mostly irrelevant.

Harter added an assist on Kenna Farrey’s third period goal for a three-point game, while Raffaelli, Schlaff and Selena Stromer had two helpers apiece.

In goal, Stephanie King made 15 saves on 17 shots for the winners.

The Storm are booked into the first of four quarterfinals at Sharks Ice in San Jose today. They’ll play the Portland (Maine) Jr. Pirates at 6 p.m. EDT.

If they win that one, the semifinals and finals are Sunday. The Storm’s potential semifinal against the Washington Wild or Charles River (Mass.) Blazers would be Sunday morning at 10:45 a.m., with the championship game at 7:45 p.m. EDT.

The top seed on the other half of the bracket, the East Coast Wizards, is also unbeaten, but won one of its games in overtime, giving them eight of a possible nine points. The Wizards will play the Illinois-based Falcons in the quarterfinal, with the other quarter being the Lady Flyers against the Colorado Tigers.
