A lucky escape

HOUGHTON – A two-vehicle accident on Montezuma Avenue this morning led to a three-hour power outage for UPPCO customers in Houghton.

About 7:25 a.m., a driver traveling north on Portage Street lost control of his or her vehicle and slid into the path of a vehicle eastbound on Montezuma Avenue, said Jeremy Hill, patrolman with the Houghton Police Department.

The second vehicle was then pushed into a power pole on Montezuma, severing the pole and causing the outage.

There were no injuries, Hill said.

Traffic was rerouted off Montezuma Avenue while power was restored.

About 12:30 p.m., Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly said they hoped to open a lane of traffic within the next hour.

“It’s difficult replacing that pole because of the mine rock,” he said. Donnelly said there might be a brief outage once the new pole is ready to be installed.

Houghton Police Department, Houghton Fire Department, Mercy EMS, Upper Peninsula Power Company and Charter Communications responded to the scene.
