Tech cancels annual ‘Spring’ Fling
HOUGHTON – Spring showed up on the calendar, but not on the weather forecast, forcing the cancellation of a Michigan Technological University tradition.
Spring Fling 2013, an annual outdoor celebration at the end of Week 13 in Tech’s 14-week “spring” semester, was scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. this Friday. The Memorial Union Board, the student organization that coordinates the event, announced the decision Tuesday morning.
“It is with great regret that we must announce Spring Fling has been canceled,” said a status shared on the MUB Board Facebook page (facebook.com/mubboard). “We appreciate the time and effort put in by organizations to prepare for Spring Fling, but unfortunately mother nature is refusing to cooperate.”
Tuesday’s most recent measurement of snow depth on the ground, as reported by Tech’s Keweenaw Research Center, is 40 inches. In 2012, there was no snow on the ground as early as March 19.
“To the best of our knowledge this is the first Spring Fling that has been canceled in recent history,” MUB Board President David Shull said in a release shared later Tuesday morning. “… I assure you that it wasn’t for lack of planning that Spring Fling isn’t happening. Instead the Memorial Union Board made the difficult call to do what it thought was best for every student at Michigan Tech.”
Two of the originally scheduled outdoor events were a motorcycle stunt show and a display of exotic animals.
MUB Board considered moving student organization booths, which are usually spread all across campus, inside at the Student Development Complex, but the cost and expected low attendance made the cost per student impractical.
“We’re currently looking into how we can create an event next year that will serve students organizations even better than the Friday event would,” Shull added in the release.
The Michigan Tech Student Foundation has also canceled its oozeball (mud volleyball) tournament for Friday, but alternative plans are in the works to still have an indoor volleyball tournament. Check out the “MTSF Oozeball Tournament 2013” Facebook event page for updates.
Some weather forecasts predict about a foot of snow to fall by the end of the day Friday, and Friday’s forecast projects a temperature range of mid-20s to mid-30s with steady snow and wind gusts up to 40 mph.
