Shawn Robert Reilly

BOOTJACK – Shawn Robert Reilly, 50, a resident of Bootjack, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Marquette General Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

Shawn was born on May 12, 1962 in Laurium, a son of Joseph and Barbara (Mattila) Reilly. He graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1981 and took business administration courses at Michigan Technological University.

He worked for his parents at the Superior Motel in Laurium until 1987 when he became the owner and manager of Shawn’s Restaurant in Laurium for the next 14 years. Afterwards he worked in the food service industry and managed Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken/Long John Silver’s of Houghton; worked as a sales consultant for Reinhardt Distributing; and most recently was employed at Michigan Technological University in their Food Services Department.

Shawn enjoyed boating, cooking and spending time with family and friends. While staying at the Beacon House during his medical treatments he helped cook a fabulous meal for the residents. He often assisted Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly with their holiday meals. Shawn spent many days on his boat “Stress Management” and was proud to have helped navigate a trawler to the Bahamas. He loved dogs and is missed by his buddy Sam, a rescue dog. Shawn was a big help to his family and friends and touched many lives. He will be sadly missed and will always be remembered for his caring nature and wonderful sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; two brothers, Lon and Fred; aunts Betty Anderson and Nathaline Poliuto; and an uncle, Fred Mattila.

He is survived by: his parents, Joe & Barb Reilly of Bootjack; two brothers, Dan (Lorri) Reilly and Joe (Thurza) Reilly, both of Laurium; aunts and uncles, Lenore (Roy) Bonini of Princess Point; Harvey (Betty) Mattila of California; Florence (Bob) Sorvala of Portage Entry; Louis (Weldon) Gaulin of Milwaukee; Mary Lou Mattila of Houghton Canal; and Bob (Dorothy) Reilly of Calumet; nieces Jamie, Heather, Christine, Jennifer and Hannah; nephews, Jesse and Aaron; numerous great-nieces, nephews, and cousins; dear friend, Linda Romps, and many wonderful friends.

An outdoor memorial service to celebrate Shawn’s life will be held this summer per his wishes.
