Fundraisers help team
To the editor:
The Houghton Junior Varsity Hockey team, which completed its second season this year with a 15-7-1 record, is completely self-funded. The team provides great hockey experience for players and also serves as a valuable step toward the varsity team.
To help pay for ice time, travel, game officials and other expenses, parents and families of players coordinate several fundraisers all winter.
The fundraisers could not have happened without the help of several local businesses.
In particular, we want to thank the following: Library Restaurant and Brew Pub, Tadych’s Econo Foods, Portage Lake Golf Course, Center Ice Skate and Sport, Custom Golf Technology, Portage Lake Pioneers, Michigan Technological University Images, Houghton All-Sports Booster Club, Nine O Six, Tranquility Salon, Jukuri Spa, Designs by Jak, Chickadees, Sherwin Williams, McGanns, 41 Lumber, Swift True Value, KeHE Foods, Kirkish Furniture, Magnuson Hotel Franklin Square Inn, Sherry Strack, Ambassador Restaurant, Cyberia Cafe, Subway, The Lunch Bag, Jimmy Johns, Jim’s Pizza, Kaleva, Pilgrim River Steakhouse, Family Video, Houghton Motor Sports, Keweenaw Auto, Walmart, Frito Lay, Coca Cola, Pepsi, McDonalds, Dirk Hembroff, our local radio stations, The Daily Mining Gazette, Dee Stadium, City of Houghton and the Houghton Fire Dept. (and there may be others we may have missed). Thank you all.
We especially want to thank Nichole McCloskey for her leadership in organizing the fundraisers. Thanks also to all the parents, families, and community who attended our events and/or bought pizzas from us.
