William “Irving” Kargela
LAURIUM – William “Irving” Kargela, 86, a resident of Laurium, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Garden View Assisted Living in Calumet.
He was born November 26, 1926 in Calumet, a son of the late William and Emma (Aho) Kargela.
Irving graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1943 and graduated from Michigan Tech 1949.
On June 16, 1951, he was married to the former Thursa Taipalus and she preceded him in death on October 15, 2009.
Irving worked as an engineer for Ford Motor Co. starting in Dearborn. Irving was given an opportunity with Ford Motor Company and moved his family to Argentina in the early 60’s. Irv and his family also lived in Mexico, England and France during the 70’s. He returned to Ford Tractor and later retired from Ford Tractor in 1983. He worked as a contractor for Ford for two years and made two trips to Venezuela.
Bill lived in Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield and in 2006 he moved back to the Keweenaw, settling in Big Traverse and then in Laurium in 2007.
Irving enjoyed fishing on Lake Superior and deer hunting. He enjoyed showing his children and grandchildren how to catch fish on Lake Superior.
In his retirement years, Irv and Thursa enjoyed summers in Big Traverse and spending the winters in Florida or Arizona.
He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, though never deployed.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Thursa; son William J.; sister, Dorothy; brother Carl.
Surviving are: son, David (Linda) Kargela of White Lake, Mich.; daughter, Karen (Earl) Campbell of Shelby Twp., Mich.; daughter- in-law, Joan Kargela of Commerce Twp, Mich.; five grandchildren: Jennifer (Nathan) Grow, Rebecca Kargela, Renee Kargela, Brian Kargela and Kenneth Kargela; two greatgrandchildren, Noah and Tessa Grow; five brothers, Roger Kargela of Calumet, Daniel Kargela of Calumet, James Kargela of Calumet, George (Karen) Kargela of Calumet and Jack Kargela of Auburn Hill, Mich.; sister; Helen (Ronald) Whiton of Calumet; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday April 24, 2013, in the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet with the Rev. Ken Toth to officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday April 23, 2013.

Burial will be in the White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Mich.
