Tournament supports school

To the editor:

On March 23 and 24, the Hancock Athletic Booster Club sponsored our annual youth basketball tournament.

This is a major fundraiser for our organization. Not only does this raise funds to support all student athletes in the Hancock school district, it also brings in money to our local economy.

Elementary and middle school basketball players come from as far as Marquette, Negaunee, Ishpeming, Ontonagon and the Crystal Falls area. They stay in our local hotels and eat in our local restaurants.

I would like to thank our local sponsors: Blau Distributing, Bruno’s Motors, Coca-Cola Bottling of Hancock, G & G Toilets Inc., Habaeros Fresh Mexican Kitchen, Hancock Bike Shop, Hanke Auto Body, Horner Flooring, Jim’s Pizza, Keweenaw Automotive, McGann Building Supply, Memorial Chapel & Plowe Funeral Services, Northland Veterinary Clinic, OHM, Pat’s Foods, Penegor Lumber, Peterson Fish Market, Portage Health, River Valley Bank, Sayen’s Business Equipment, State Farm Insurance – Mike Lahti, Superior Service Towing, Twin Lakes Java, U.P. Laser Engraving, Wickley Agency and 41 Lumber.

Also, many thanks to Cathe Sayen for being the tournament director and putting in endless hours of work into the tournament, Brandon Sayen for selling T-shirts and sweats and Dan O’Connell for his hard work.

I would like to thank all the parent volunteers and student athletes who helped at the gates, worked the concession stands, helped with the setup and cleanup, ran the clock and did the score keeping.

Finally, I would like to thank all the members of the Booster Club for their help in organizing and running this event. A job well done.
