Solid run for Gremlins in Eagle River

EAGLE RIVER, Wis. – The Houghton High School track teams put together solid finishes in an indoor meet at Northland Pines, Wis., Tuesday.

The Gremlins girls were a close second of 10 teams, while the boys took third.

Tomahawk, Wis., topped the girls’ standings with 142 1/2 to Houghton’s 131. On the boys’ side, host Northland Pines won going away with 164, Tomahawk had 107 1/2 and the Gremlins amassed 88.

Houghton collected three wins on the girls’ side, opening the meet with a victory in the 3,200-meter relay. Blaire Zenner, Kelsie Richards, Marika Abbott and Michelle Laux glided to victory in 10 minutes, 59.16 seconds.

The Gremlins got their other two wins over distances as well, with Ashley Laux taking the 800-meter run in 2:39.80 and Marika Abbott taking the 3,200 in 13:25.37.

Houghton also got seven runner-up finishes from two relay teams, Kira Fowler in the 55 hurdles, Natalie Datto in the 200 hurdles and long jump, Elisa Jurmu in the high jump and Annika Wheeler in shot put.

For the Houghton boys, Ryan LaBerge leapt 19-7 to win by nine inches. The Gremlins also took second-place finishes in the boys’ 3,200 relay and through Cody Goodreau in the high jump.
