Donald F. Grentz
NISULA – Donald F. Grentz, 85, of Nisula, passed away peacefully at home on April 24, 2013.
He was born in Dollar Bay on July 10, 1927, the son of the late Joseph and Myrtle (Clisch) Grentz. Donald attended school in Dollar Bay and as a young man, he worked on farms before working on ships on the Great Lakes.
He married the former Vivian Lindrus on Jan. 21, 1950, in Detroit, where he worked for Ford Motor Co. until moving back to Nisula. He then worked in underground copper mines: Caledonia Mine in Greenland and White Pine Copper Mine, retiring in July 1983 after 25 years of service.
Lung disease limited his working, so he spent time building jigsaw puzzles.
Donald was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie.
Donald is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vivian; children, Don (Elaine) Grentz, Jim (Jean) Grentz, Ann (Albert) Brunk and Jan (Steve) Kallungi; grandchildren, John Sullivan, Jeff (Karen) Sullivan, Mike Hazen, Michael (Kathy Rose) Grentz, Christy (Paul) Zvolena, Bill Brunk, Patrick Brunk, Gordon Grentz, Chad (Heather) Grentz, Jesse (Kiley) Grentz and Dustin (Kimberly) Grentz; great-grandchildren, Latoya Brunk, Mannie Brunk, Mikayla and Trevor Sullivan, Brandon Sullivan, Dylan, Ethan, Mara and Aiden Grentz, Jayme and Molly Zvolena, Joelle and Jack Grentz, Elise, Samuel and Gabriel Grentz; niece Frances Baer; numerous in-laws and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kathryn Hanusack; brother, Gordon Grentz; two brothers-in-law, Ron Pelto and Robert Turpeinen.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4 from Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie with Pastor John Autio officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services. Interment will take place in the Nisula Cemetery. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers for “Papa Don.”
Following the funeral service, a luncheon will be served in the fellowship hall.
