Miners sweep Gremlin softball

NEGAUNEE – Houghton fell to 1-6 for the season after a pair of defeats at Negaunee, 10-0 and 15-5.

In the first one, Adena Anderson struck out seven Gremlins and allowed hits to Colleen Toorongian, Anna Gaffney and Lisa Keskimaki. Sister Rosalie Anderson pitched Game 2 and allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings. Each walked two and combined, they struck out 14.

Jill Keskimaki’s RBI double to left-center was the big highlight of Game 2 for the Gremlins. She came around to score after Jill Toorongian’s sacrifice bunt was thrown away.

Gaffney had two hits for the the Gremlins.

“We have so much to work on but there are a lot of positive things … it’s just tough because our first outside practice was Monday and we haven’t been able to do all the things we need to do,” Houghton coach Mel Grego said.

Colleen Toorongian pitched Game 1, allowing four earned runs and striking out three. Bekah Goodreau took the loss in game two.

Houghton plays its home opener against Hancock today. Game one of the doubleheader starts at 4 p.m.
