Generosity always a U.P. thing

To the editor:

Jane Nordberg’s column about her years in the Copper Country reminds me of an incident concerning our younger son in the early 90s. He was a freshman at NMU at the time and playing football there. After attending practice, he was returning home to Houghton for the weekend when his vehicle hit a patch of ice near Michigamme and slid off into a water-filled ditch. He walked to a nearby service station where the owner not only called for a wrecker to pull the car out of the ditch, but also paid for the cost of the wrecker when he found our son didn’t have the money to do so. “You can pay me the next time you pass through,” he said. And that’s what our son did. He has always been grateful for the generosity he was shown that day by a man he’d never met before
