Exceptional youth worth celebrating
To the Editor:
On a blizzardy evening in late January, the Keweenaw Community Foundation gathered a hardy group together to celebrate Copper Country youth at Pure Gold 2013. The Keweenaw Community Foundation supports and believes in our youth and this evening was a showcase for what our local youth have accomplished and what their hopes and dreams are for the future.
The evening celebrated youth achievement. Dollar Bay High School robotics students were recognized for their ingenuity, creativity, and collaboration with the Park Service in developing an underwater robot for research. The Keweenaw Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) shared its vision of working with local schools to develop leadership and philanthropy through programs they’ve developed and implemented in local schools and by supporting their peers with grants. Copper Country HOSA, a student organization for future health care professionals, was recognized for its achievement at the regional, state and national levels. Maddie Stimac, a Houghton High School senior, represented Copper Country HOSA, addressing the group with a speech on how HOSA has made a difference in her life.
The Keweenaw Community Foundation continues to impact Copper Country HOSA students. This year, 80 juniors and seniors from all of our local schools, have had the opportunity to participate in HOSA because of the Keweenaw Community Foundation’s support. The KCF continues to make a difference in the lives of these young people by awarding them $5,000 from Portage Health’s Community Health Grant.
HOSA’s 2013 theme is “Build A Better You.” Copper Country HOSA students were able to participate in local, regional and state Leadership Conferences where they competed against the U.P. and then the best in the state. Four local students achieved their dream of qualifying for Nationals. The KCF recognizes that investing in our youth, to “Build A Better You”, builds leaders, builds better schools, and strengthens our community. Thank you, Keweenaw Community Foundation for believing in and supporting Copper Country youth!
