Gremlins give up too many runs

IRONWOOD – Run prevention proved a problem for the Houghton softball team Tuesday in Ironwood as the Gremlins went down to twin defeats, 16-13 and 17-2 to the Red Devils.

The teams combined for 10 runs in the first inning with Ironwood scoring six, three unearned. It started a pattern in which Houghton was unable to overcome the early deficit.

In the seventh down three runs, the closest Houghton got was to have the tying runner on deck.

Jill Keskimaki and Anna Gaffney had two singles apiece to lead Houghton. Colleen Toorongian took the loss after walking 12 and striking out seven.

In game two, Ironwood scored nine times in the first inning.

Back-to-back-to-back doubles from Sydney Dillinger, Lisa Keskimaki and Kaitlyn Sanders led to two runs and Houghton’s offensive highlight of the nightcap.

Bekah Goodreau took the loss.

Houghton returns to the field Thursday night for a home doubleheader with Kingsford.
