HANCOCK – Doreen Hueter, 79, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock with family and friends by her side. Prior to being a patient at the Medical Care Facility, Doreen resided in various locations locally in the area.
She was born in Durham Ontario, Canada, on September 25, 1933, one of seven children to the late Joseph and Margaret (Mighton) Davison and attended school in Canada.
She relocated from Canada to Lake Orion, Mich., where she worked in the catering business.
Doreen was first married to Ronald Howitt and later married Frederick Hueter. She and Fred moved from Lake Orion to Hancock where they made their home.
In 1970, they purchased the Golden Pheasant in Hancock, and operated the business for ten years. Doreen also worked at the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home in Calumet as a housemother and bartended at the Crystal Room in Hancock. Doreen loved antiquing and ran an antique resale shop in Houghton.
Doreen was a loving, caring person who opened her home to not only foster children but any children who needed a place to stay. She was like a mother to all the children and was someone the children could count on for the love and support they so needed.
Doreen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 90 of Lake Linden. She enjoyed bird watching and antiquing but mostly enjoyed being at her camp in Rice Lake. She loved fishing with her grandchildren and looked forward to Derby Day at the camp, an annual event the family participated in.
Surviving are her children, Carolyn (Michael) Hooker of Arkansas, Darrell (Blue) Hueter of Lake Orion, Becky Howitt of Hubbell, Scott (Paula) Hueter of Hancock, Joette (Andy) Erickson of Hancock, Sharon Hill (Larry) Gerasch of Vulcan, Mich., Penny Black of Rice Lake; 27 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a brother, Ivan Davison of Toronto, Ontario; two sisters, Carole Easterbrook of Kitchener, Ontario and Ruth (Lloyd) George of Elora, Ontario; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and the children she mothered over the years.
Besides her parents, Doreen was also preceded in death by her two husbands, Ronald Howitt and Frederick Hueter; a son, Warren Howitt; two brothers, Dell and Eric Davison; and a sister, Mary Cole.
