Pat’s pitchers hurl 16 strikeouts
HOUGHTON – Opening Day in the Portage Lake Little League got pushed back to Sunday by rain, but in the opener, three Pat’s Foods pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts in a 4-1 Major (age 11-12) division win over the Portage Health Sports Medicine Green Sox.
Ivan Crist struck out two in the first inning before Alex Nordstrom came on and fanned 12 in four innings. Travis Pietila finished it off with two strikeouts in the sixth.
Pat’s pushed three runs across in the third inning as Nordstrom doubled in Crist and Dmitri Kochan delivered a two-RBI single, one of his two hits.
A Jackson Rochi single and three walks led to a fourth-inning insurance run before Portage Health Sports Medicine got one in the sixth on an error, passed ball and Elias Rajala’s RBI single. Rajala took the pitching loss, going three innings with eight strikeouts.
J. Peltier Construction started its season off right with an 11-1 win over Kissel Chevrolet in their Minor (age 9-10) debut.
JPC scored four times in the first on a leadoff triple by Shawn Ruotsala, Dylan Horning’s bunt single, Davin Hill’s double and a fielder’s choice.
Dylan Primeau, Jonah Horning, Austin Miller and Saar Bar-Ziv delivered singles in a three-run third, while Dylan and Nick Horning, Primeau and an error led to four more in the fourth.
Kissel got its run in the second when Brady Shmeirer singled in Tanner Larson after his triple.
Primeau, Nick Horning and Davin Hill combined on the pitching duties, allowing two hits, four walks and striking out 11.
Offensively, Dylan Horning had three hits and Primeau two.
In the Keweenaw Little League Major play, Loading Zone II scored in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-1 walk-off win.
Noah Bach walked and came in on Caleb Gregorie’s single for the winning run.
Connor Baccus, Bach and Carter Crouch pitched for Loading Zone, combining to strike out 12 and allow one hit and one walk.
Drake Schmitz and Tom Berg pitched for Calumet Electronics.
