Butina best in playoff golf
ONTONAGON – Stephen Butina of Jeffers spoiled the day for home course hero Brandon Jilbert, winning a playoff over the Gladiator with a birdie on the second hole of the Copper Country Conference golf meet at Ontonagon Golf Club Monday.
Both players shot 75 for 18 holes, carding a 36 over their second tours of the nine-hole course.
Jeffers also eked out a narrow victory over Ontonagon for the team competition, posting a 320 to Ontonagon’s 328. Lake Linden-Hubbell (359), Chassell (389) and Baraga (408).
Tyler Bailey of Jeffers (77) and Trevor Ongie of LL-H (78) were in the hunt to the finish, with Logan Jilbert of Ontonagon posting the fifth-best score.
On the girls’ side, Rebecca Larson of Baraga claimed the best number with a 49 for nine holes, one shot better than Ontonagon’s Chloe Ashley.
Ciara Larson of LL-H (52) and Abby Domitrovich of Ontonagon (57) also broke 60.
The Gladiators easily defeated Jeffers in team play, posting a 235. The Jets had a 290, non-league visitor Watersmeet had 311 and the other teams didn’t field a full roster.
