Walter L. Riederich

LAKE LINDEN – Walter L. Riederich, 73, of Lake Linden, passed away peacefully at home on May 18, 2013.

He was born December 18, 1939, in Flint, a son of Walter M. and Arbutus (Satterley) Riederich. He graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1957.

After high school, Walter joined the Marines. He worked at Ellis’s Service Station until he owned his own business, Walt’s Standard Station in Owosso, Mich. After selling the business, he was employed by Applegate Chevrolet and Vanderhorst Motors in Flint as the service manager. In 1975, he moved to the Copper Country where he worked in Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools as Director of Maintenance and Transportation until his retirement in 2001.

He was married to his high school sweetheart, Vada Bryan on August 13, 1960, in Flint.

Walter was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbell where he served as a trustee. He served on the Schoolcraft Township Board, volunteered as a “Big Brother” and worked with the Boy Scouts.

Walter enjoyed working on basically anything with a motor. He restored antique tractors and cars. He loved camping, boating, 4-wheeling and snowmobiling. He liked to work in the garden and cut the grass. He also enjoyed spending time with family, especially grandkids and great-grandkids.

Walter was honest, responsible and hard-working.

“He didn’t tell me how to live, he lived and let me watch him do it,” Clarence Budington Kelland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marge.

Walter is survived by his wife, Vada of Lake Linden; three children, Holly (Bill) Rivest of Lake Linden, Linda (Robert) Romps of Gladstone and Tim Riederich of Lake Linden; three grandchildren, Natalie (Norman) Larson, Savanna (Gabriel) Rayner and Whitney Rivest; three great grandchildren, Gus, Jayden and Caeden; a brother, Larry Riederich of Grand Blanc; two former international exchange students, Arild Gertz of Norway and Kaya Sugimoto of Japan; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family will receive guests at 10 a.m., May 22 with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbell with Rev. James Fundum to officiate.
