Hannah I. Wirtanen
ATLANTIC MINE -Hannah I. Wirtanen, 96, a long-time resident of Atlantic Mine, and former Chassell and Covington resident, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.
She was born in Atlantic Mine, Mich., on July 6, 1916, the youngest of 14 children to George and Kaisa (Pyy) Mikkola and attended the Adams Township Schools and the Painesdale High School.
On June 22, 1933, she was married to Julius “Jake” Wirtanen in Hancock, and he preceded her in death on May 3, 1994.
Hannah was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic Mine.
Surviving are five daughters, Anita Gerich of Dodgeville, Annette (Norman) Vollrath of Ray, Minn., Bette Conard of Prior Lake, Minn., Judy (Bill) Alatalo of St. Ignace and Dolly Felten of Chaska, Minn.; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hannah was preceded in death by her parents; 13 brothers and sisters; her husband, Jake; a son, Donald; two daughters, Sherry and Jeanne; two grandsons, Ross Alatalo and David Vollrath; and three sons-in-law, Anton Gerich, John Conard and Larry Felten.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2013, in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic Mine, with Elaine Hendrickson to officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery.
