Remember why we celebrate

While everyone is thankful to have a day off from work (for the lucky ones at least) and time to spend with family and friends, it’s important that the true reason behind Memorial Day not be forgotten.

Memorial Day is when we honor the fallen soldiers who gave everything they could – everything – so that we could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press – all of these things and more would not be possible if not for the brave people out there who don a uniform, stand up and say, “I will fight.” They fight so that others may live, they fight to keep not only their own families safe, but those across the country. They are our brothers and sisters, moms and dads, aunts and uncles, husbands and wives – and today we thank them for all they have done for us and remember the courage they had in doing so.

Although Memorial Day is for honoring those that have died, it’s important to acknowledge and thank those who still live and continue to fight for our country and our freedoms. When you’re out there today and see a member of the Armed Forces, don’t be afraid to go up to him or her and say thanks for all they have done. They continually put their lives on the line for us and who’s to say if you’ll get another chance to do it.

Enjoy your beer, enjoy your hot dogs and hamburgers, enjoy the time you spend with your loved ones, but don’t forget why you’re able to do it.

We here at The Daily Mining Gazette would like to say thank you to all the members of the Armed Forces who have given the ultimate sacrifice and to those who continue to serve.
