Pietila pushes Pat’s in extra-inning victory

HOUGHTON – Travis Pietila posted a three-hit night, including a double in the top of the seventh, as Pat’s Foods grabbed an 8-6 comeback extra-inning win over Loading Zone II in Lake Linden Monday.

Loading Zone had a quick 4-0 lead after three innings, but Pat’s battled back, with a fifth-inning Pietila single driving in Alex Nordstrom, who had reached on a triple, with the tying run. Dmitri Kochan bunted and both he and Nordstrom took advantage of errors to score.

Loading Zone tied it in its last at-bat on Noah Bach’s single, an error and two stolen bases.

Ivan Crist pitched three innings for the winners, allowing just one hit and no earned runs. He struck out five. Jackson Rocchi had two hits for Pat’s, now 4-2.

In an interleague game at Gipp Recreation Complex in Laurium, Portage Sports Medicine topped Calumet Electronics 7-2.

Elias Rajala fanned eight in four innings for Portage Sports. Justin Norkol finished off the game and delivered two hits and three RBIs. P.J. Donnelly also had two hits and three RBIs.

Thrivent Financial dropped Kissel Chevrolet 16-6 in a Portage Lake Little League Minor (age 9-10) game with the help of 11 big runs in the fifth inning.

Thomas Bump and William Romano posted three hits apiece. They split the pitching duties evenly, with Bump recording eight K’s and Romano six.

Thomas Lassila and Gavin Lawson had two hits for the winners.

J. Peltier Construction outlasted Superior Service 10-7. Davin Hill pitched 4 2/3 innings for the 5-0 winners and had a home run, two triples and four RBIs.

Shawn Ruotsala and Saar Bar-Ziv had a pair of hits.

A four-run third gave J. Peltier a 6-1 lead at the halfway mark, then added pairs of runs in the next two innings before stopping a Superior Service comeback at three runs in the top of the sixth.

Gavin Zerbst was 3-for-3 in defeat, while Eli Larson and Ari Rautiola both had a triple and a single.

In senior girls’ softball, Jan Bruin-Slot Builders blanked McDonalds 13-0. Emily Lahnala had her second grand slam in as many games, Megan Yeo went 3-for-3 with two triples and Emily Erkkila was the winning pitcher.

Lakes Dairyland shook off a loss last week to L’Anse by defeating the Baraga Blaze 19-7 at the Boneyard.

Abby Sutherland and Morgan Peters combined on a four-hitter and struck out seven.

Baraga scored five times in the third to tie it, but Dairyland outscored the visitors 14-2 over the next three innings.

Sutherland and Kyleigh Audette had four and three hits, respectively, for the victors.

In Major softball, Michigan Tech Employees Federal Credit Union won a 6-4 squeaker over Douglass Agency for its fifth straight victory to start the season.

Three walks and singles by Dana Johnson and Andra Campbell helped MTEFCU lead 5-1 after an inning.

Millie Hoskins’ three-run homer brought Douglass Agency within a run.

Delaney Heinonen tripled and brought in Maddy Johnson in the top of the second with the key insurance run.

Jillian Parker was the winning pitcher, with nine strikeouts.
