David J. Pouttu

ELO – David J. Pouttu, 63, of Elo, died suddenly on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at his home.

David was born at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., on June 11, 1949.

He was the son of Paul and T. Florence (Lystila) Pouttu. At the age of 10 months, Dave moved to the family homestead where the family were successful dairy farmers.

Dave attended the John A. Doelle School in Tapiola. While there, he played basketball and baseball. He was an active member of the Future Farmers of America and 4-H. He graduated with the class of 1967.

Dave continued to farm and attend Michigan Tech after the untimely death of his father. In 1972, Dave owned and operated Seven Mile One Stop in Redford, Mich. It was there he met and married Mary Quinn Caswell. They later parted company.

Dave began a new career at Trans-Matic where he was director of research and tooling. The highlight of his years there was working in England developing fire retardant material for London Transport and the chunnel which is the underwater vehicle tunnel under the English Channel from France to England.

Later in his career, he worked for Nedrow Refractories in the Detroit area and was there until retirement in 2004.

Dave returned home to Elo and built a house on his beloved family homestead. He was proud of his Finnish heritage being a second generation Finnish American.

Dave was founder of the Elo tractor races which were held on Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Dave was a fan of Tiger baseball. He enjoyed the steady stream of friends that visited daily.

Dave was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie and the Otter Lake Sportsman’s Club.

Dave was preceded in death by his father, Paul in 1965;and his mother, T. Florence in 1977.

Surviving are his brother, Ed (Pat) of Denver, Co.; sister, Pamela (Clayton) Ekdahl of Baraga; nephews, Gerritt (Mary) of Ortonville, Mich., Paul (Ashtin Koski) of Green Bay, Wis.; Antti of Stockholm, Sweden; great-nephew, Alex; and great-nieces, Grace and Payton; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013, in the Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie, with Pastor John Autio to officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the church and 1 hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the Elo Cemetery. A special tribute at Dave’s request will be his John Deer tractor handled by Howard Maki at the burial. Pall bearers will be Frank Pouttu, David Paavola, Greg Keranen, Roger Karsama, Roger Laitila and Mike Shaw.
