Donald P. Schenk
RICE LAKE – Donald P. Schenk, 89, of Rice Lake (Lake Linden), passed away at the Omega House in Houghton on June 6, 2013 with family at his side.
He was born March 5, 1924 in Lake Linden, a son of Matthias and Catherine (Kammerschen) Schenk.
Donald graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School in 1943.
In World War II, Don was stationed in Italy, France and Germany as a telephone lineman. He proudly served with Patton’s Army in the Battle of the Bulge. Don served in the Army from July 1943 until February 1946. After a short stint working for C&H, he re-enlisted in the Army in 1948. He was stationed in Alaska and was honorably discharged in July 1952.
Back in Lake Linden, Don worked for Holzberger Plumbing, learning the trade. He later worked in the Civil Service at KI Sawyer in the plumbing and heating field.
He was a 60-plus-year member of American Legion Post 90 and a VFW member.
Don retired to Rice Lake where he enjoyed fishing and hunting in the Keweenaw.
He was preceded in death by his parents; all his siblings, Susanna “Sis” (Charlie) Mehring, Alfred “Al” (Margaret) Schenk, Mathilda “Tillie”(Chuck) McGinley, Louise “Mopsy” (Ken) Blackburn, Chester “Chet” Schenk and Wilbur “Bill” (Catherine) Schenk.
Don had four nephews and seven nieces and their families including 33 great-nieces and nephews, 77 great-great-nieces and nephews and 27 great-great-great-nieces and nephews.
There will be no services. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden.
Charitable contributions in Don’s name may be made to the Salvation Army, St. Vincent dePaul or the Omega House.
The family would like to thank Houghton County Medical Care Facility, Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, Dr. Hafeman and the Omega House for outstanding care and compassion shown to Don these past few months.
